Aggressive drivers in war zones carry over the habit when they come home, U study finds
Lifesaving driving habits are hard to break, U finds
The same aggressive driving that may have saved lives in Iraq and Afghanistan is being carried over by returning Minnesota National Guard members to local streets and highways, according to a study released Wednesday.
Researchers with the University of Minnesota surveyed 150 Guard members and found that 25 percent had driven through stop signs within 30 days of their returns home. Almost 25 percent also reported driving in the middle of the road or into oncoming traffic.
These driving behaviors become necessary and reflexive for Soldiers in war zones, according to the study, led by U occupational therapist Erica Stern and sociologist Todd Rockwood. "Unfortunately, when these same driving behaviors are inappropriately carried over to American roads, they endanger Soldiers, their families and their communities," the researchers said.
The study was one of several highlighted this week by the Defense Department as part of a military health research conference in Kansas City, MO.
